2025-05-21 –, Main Stage
Understand and leverage the value of each member of your team by using the 3Hs – Honest, Holistic, and Humor.
Knowing your value and seeing the value in your teammates is the best tool you have in your DevOps toolbox. Some have the most flashy and visible skills; others tend to play more supportive roles. But everyone is star - valuable to the team and worthy of being celebrated and recognized.
But how do you get to this level of teamwork? Deanna and Kara will use ourselves as an example. Frequent collaborators, we have figured out what each person’s strengths are and we maximize on those in order to get things done. And we use the 3 Hs – Honest, Holistic, and Humor – to guide us:
Honest: We are honest about what we are good at (and not) and maximize each other’s strengths
Holistic: We look at what we want to accomplish from a holistic viewpoint – we as a team are the stars, not one or the other of us
Humor: We have a sense of humor about everything (including our shortcomings)
TBD
After graduating from college, Kara spent a decade working on Avionics systems at Lockheed Martin Federal System-Owego. She then took a 15 year hiatus, focusing on raising her children and performing extensive volunteer work with the PTA, Girl Scouts, and other organizations. Returning to work in July 2018, she has been employed with The MITRE Corporation for 6 years with a specialization in Agile organizational transformations. It is through this work that Kara determined that Psychological Safety must be present for Agile and DevOps practices to be implemented successfully. Kara and co-presenter Deanna Stanley speak at conferences about Psychological Safety topics.
Deanna started her career as an embedded programmer in the telecommunications industry, and was a significant contributor to Northern California having no internet for 2 days back in the late 90s. She now helps sponsor transitions to Agile and DevOps and spends her days screaming “it’s the people, not the tools!” Deanna’s love of her life is her dog Grimbal, which is why she’s always covered in fur.
