In this talk, I’ll share how we transitioned a fully remote company from synchronous to asynchronous collaboration, the lessons learned, and how we reintroduced sync moments to balance productivity, flexibility, and team connection.
Working in a fully remote company, I took part in redesigning how our squads collaborated. We moved away from excessive synchronous meetings and embraced asynchronous workflows to enhance focus, autonomy, and reduce burnout across teams.
This session explores key concepts like “maker time” versus “manager time,” and how these time models impact productivity in distributed environments. You’ll learn the pros and cons of fully asynchronous versus hybrid models, and what to consider before making such transitions.
We’ll discuss practical strategies, tools, and decision-making frameworks that helped us implement effective async communication—without sacrificing clarity or accountability. From documentation practices to async stand-ups, every step was tailored to our team’s context.
Finally, I’ll explain why we deliberately reintroduced certain synchronous touchpoints to foster alignment and team morale. The talk will equip leaders with insights on how to create a remote culture that is both productive and human-centered.
